I am of the old school and so is my husband. We subscribe to “Spare the rod, spoil the child” parenting philosophy.
Both my husband and I were spanked when we were children and neither of us carry the emotional scars from that experience. I am not saying those experiences were enjoyable but we understood why they were carried out.
It is hard to reason with very young children. Everything is emotional and everything is “me”. Many times spanking is the only thing that stops them from carrying on doing what they have been told not to do. They don’t like the spanking and many times just the threat of a spanking is enough to make them behave.
I don’t like the trend that is going on right now, which is to try to outlaw spanking. Spanking at the right time, for the right reason is beneficial in the long run. The government has no business to tell parents how to discipline their children.
And I do not believe that spanking the child will only lead the child to beat on other children. Children are by nature selfish, and whether we like it or not our little angel can be quite the devil if left alone to their own devices.
When my children are older and can be reasoned with, of course we will not continue to spank them. That would only cause resentment and dissatisfaction. We will then use the “carrot and stick” style of parenting. Withholding treats and rewards is going to be more effective than spanking will ever be.
While my kids are young, I do not want to be their best friend. I want to be their parent. When they are older yes, but I will not let them forget that I am still the parent.
Just call me old fashioned when it comes to parenting my children.
He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. ~ Proverbs 13:24
